DHL Newlands the place to be right now

A mini-festival of rugby is set to take place at DHL Newlands over the next fortnight, as the 2012 Absa Currie Cup kicks-off, followed by the start of the all-new Castle Rugby Championship.

This weekend, DHL Western Province will host the Sharks in both teams' 2012 Absa Currie Cup openers (kick-off 19h10), before the Springboks - with six DHL WP players in the squad at present - take to DHL Newlands the following week.

As the toughest and most historic provincial rugby competition, across the rugby-playing globe, nothing attracts local attention quite like the Absa Currie Cup and tickets are available for Saturday's clash.

"It's important to get off to a good start in the competition irrespective of who you play and home games are particular importance too," said Allister Coetzee, the DHL WP head coach.

"Our focus is now on the Currie Cup which our management consider the first phase in our Super Rugby campaign next year. We know how important this Currie Cup will be for us and we want to do really well, but we use it as our first phase of our campaign going forward."

With DHL WP playing away the next week - on August 18 - DHL Newlands will then host South Africa's first-ever Rugby Championship match, between Argentina and the Springboks, which is also the first time that these two teams will lock horns in Cape Town, having met at five other venues on 13 previous occasions since 1993.

The Springboks, of course, will be under the leadership of DHL Stormers captain Jean de Villiers, the experienced centre having been handed the national captaincy for the rest of 2012 and he could be joined by a number of other local players in the Bok side against Argentina.

Tickets are on sale at the DHL Newlands ticket office and are also available via the web, at, ranging from R100 to R450; so snap yours up today to be part of the historic occasion, before it is too late.
