Gio: Great to be back
2010 will forever live in the memory of Vodacom WP flyer Gio Aplon.

After helping the Vodacom Stormers team to their first ever Vodacom Super 14 final, the 27-year-old got his first call up to the Springbok squad which he took with open arms scoring 2 tries on his home ground against the French in only his second test match.

Enjoying his Bok adventure

Things haven’t all gone to plan though for Gio who was part of the national sides unsuccessful tour to the Antipodes where the team suffered three heavy defeats on the trot. The former Bok sevens star however holds no regrets over his time playing in the Green and Gold. He told the Club Newlands ezine: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Springboks over the last few weeks. Whilst it is obvious things did not go quite as we wanted them to, I am happy to have been able to get this chance to play for the team.”

Gio announced his return to Vodacom WP in fine style, scoring two excellent tries in the 54-13 rout over the Barloworld Toyota Pumas last Friday. Aplon admits that he was delighted to return to Province. “It is always good to play Currie Cup for Province and I was delighted to get back to Newlands. As I said I really enjoyed my time with the Boks, but it is always great to come home and see the boys again.”

All about the team

Whilst it cannot be denied that Aplon made a massive impact in his return to the Striped jerseys, Gio was more focused on the team’s successes rather than his own. “It is always great to score two tries, but at the end of the day the most important aspect is for the team to win. Individuals can help, but it is what one can contribute for the whole team and I am glad I could help in this way.”

This weekend sees another stern test for Allister Coetzee’s men when the boys travel up to Kimberley to face a Griquas side who have already notched up wins over the Sharks and the Lions on their home patch. Gio is therefore not taking the challenge lightly. He said: “Griquas are always tough, particularly when they at home. We have lost by 1 point the last two times we have travelled to Kimberley so we know what to expect and will be taking this game as seriously as any.”

With this attitude it looks certain that the whole team, and Gio, will be ready for battle this coming Saturday!
