Coach's Column
Boks return

The return of the non contracted Boks Juan, JDV and Gio couldn’t have come at a better time. They have proved themselves as world class players and very ably fill the gap left by injuries to Tim, Frikkie and Fabien. The balance of our Boks Schalla, Fourie, Habana and Ricky are available from our last league fixture against the Sharks.

As part of our on-going longer term vision of blooding our youngsters, the return of experienced internationals affords us the opportunity to start Lionel Cronje at 10. The Boks presence certainly assists when starting youngsters in key positions bringing experience, guidance, decision making, confidence and calm. Lionel was given a full match last week at U21 level, specifically to prepare him for a senior start this week. He is hungry, talented and will grab the opportunity with both hands.

This week’s match is no gimme. We know the Leopards will come to Newlands and throw everything at us. They came close to beating the Pumas twice and pushed the Bulls. We are at the point in our season where we have to win games – securing the points on offer will help restore our early season confidence and momentum. As a team we are very focussed on this match and realise its importance.

I would also like to congratulate Duane on his ABSA Currie Cup player of the month award. Duane’s play this season has been monumental in every game. He is a versatile player contributing in our set and loose phases and has been instrumental in getting us this far and deserves the accolade.

The game this week is not televised, so you will need to be at Newlands this week to see this all new backline in operation.

See you there.

Allister Coetzee
