The Vodacom WP U19's march to the final began in Bloemfontein with a hard fought 31-27 win against a tough Free State side. This was followed up by an impressive 7 consecutive victories. In the process WP U19’s annihilated the Lions 45-7, beat the Blue Bulls at Newlands and came up tops against a good Sharks team in Durban 28-25.
Then week 9 on a sunny afternoon at Newlands the team suffered a narrow 36-37 loss to a surprising Leopards side. This was WP’s first set back, but Head Coach Nazeem Adams went back to the drawing board and exactly a week later they returned to winning ways with 29-7 win against the Griffons at UCT.
On the 2nd of October came WP’s hardest challenge, the Blue Bulls at Loftus. This sparked arguably the result of the season for the team, a 29-8 triumph and it came down to a complete team performance. Last game of the round robin stages of the Absa U19 competition saw the side take on their Shark counterparts at Newlands. What a game to watch from the very first to the last minute, eventually Province fighting back after being down 19-15 at the half time break to record a great 36-32victory.
WP ended the Round Robin stages on top of the Absa Under 19 tournament log with 49 points. First place on the log meant that the u19’s would have a home semi-final at Newland against the fourth placed Leopards.
Semi-final day came and in a one sided encounter WP accounted for the Leopards in a very professional performance from the youngsters. After leading 20-6 at halftime, the U19’s finished the game with a comfortable 49-13 win which see’s them advance to the finals of the competition. In the other Semi-final the Bulls beat the Sharks 24-21.
The U19’s have scored the second most points in the tournament with 475 up to now (only 21 behind the Bulls) while having the best points difference of 248 in the tournament. The team also boasts the best defensive record, they have only conceded 227 points on the road to the final.
A huge congratulations has to go out to Nazeem Adams and his management team for their professionalism in their the way they have managed this awesome Under 19 team. They are helping to produce future WP stars for years to come.
So on the 30th of October at 12pm, WP under 19’s will take on the Bulls in a north vs South derby at Absa Stadium in Durban at 12pm.
