The Vodacom Western Province under-21 side clinched a dramatic last-gasp victory over Free State in their match in the Absa national competition on Friday evening at Newlands.
The home team led 24-20 at halftime, but in the second half the team from Bloemfontein fought back and when they scored a try and conversion in the 77th minute it seemed like it was game, set and match.
Province flyhalf Gary van Aswegen, who kept his team in contention throughout the game with prolific display of goal-kicking, had other ideas. The youngster broke Free State hearts when he succeeded with a penalty in the last minute.
The young Cheetahs scored five tries to the three of the home side, but in the end had to leave the field tail between their legs. For WP it was a good win and it tasted even better after their defeat to the Natal Sharks last weekend.
Vodacom WP - Tries: Dan Poolman, Stokkies Hanekom, Yaya Hartzenberg; Conversions: Gary van Aswegen (2); Penalties: Van Aswegen (7).
Free State - Tries: Cameron Jacobs, Frank Herne, Johannes Prinsloo, Marcel van der Merwe, Robert van Schalkwyk; Conversions: Fanna du Toit (3), George Whitehead (1); Penalties: Du Toit (1), Whitehead (1).
