The Vodacom Western Province age-group teams on Friday continued their good run in their respective national competitions by trouncing their counterparts of the Lions.
The WP under-21 side of coach Rassie Erasmus prevailed in an entertaining game that produced a feast of running rugby. WP scored 8 tries and the Lions 5. The home team fought back every time Province threatened to run away with the game.
In the end there was no doubt, however, that WP deserved victory.
For WP Johann Sadie, Berton Klaasen, Danie Poolman (2), Stokkies Hanekom, Albe de Swardt (2) and Siya Kolisi scored tries. Gary van Aswegen converted 5 and Martin du Toit 1, while Van Aswegen contributed a penalty.
For the Lions Riaan Arends, Jaco Kriel, Marnitz Jacobs, Heinrich Cronje and Hendrik la Grange scored tries. Cronje converted 3 and added 3 penalties.
The Vodacom WP under-19s produced a tour de force in annihilating the Lions 47-23 and is still unbeaten after 8 games in the national Absa competition.
At halftime the score was 16-11 and it seemed the Lions still had a chance of upsetting the applecart. But after halftime there was only one team on the field. Province dominated possession, enjoyed territorial advantage and ran the Lions off their feet.
Fullback Ulrich Beyers enjoyed a good day at the office with his kicking boot and contributed 22 points.
Tries were scored by Clearance Khumalo, Michael van der Spuy, Christoff Fernhout (2) and Bradley Mentoor.
For the Lions Brian Skosana, Tiaan Radyn and Pierre Lombard scored, while Dale Sabbagh contributed a conversion and 2 penalties.
